Slowing the Ravages of Age
A search for the legendary Fountain of Youth has captivated people for centuries, but today’s scientists are discovering anti-aging breakthroughs in the cells of mice and worms. Even turtles, rockfish and whales—all documented to live 200 years or longer with little signs of aging—are helping researchers determine how to slow aging in humans.
Mayo Clinic researchers in Rochester, Minn., reported for the first time a drug used in mice that postpones and even prevents some aging conditions such as cataracts and wrinkles through fat loss. A body’s healthy cells continuously divide to keep tissues and organs working properly. Throughout life, in a state called senescence, a person’s cells stop splitting. With aging, senescent cells build up in the body and produce harmful chemicals, which can lead to tissue inflammation and underlying ills such as diabetes, dementia and hardening of the arteries. Only 5 percent or less of an older adult’s total cells are senescent, but these inactive cells can cause extensive problems.
Researchers also are focusing on reversing age-related muscle wasting. Muscle mass and strength decline with age, and decreased muscle activity can lead to weight gain and an increased risk for hypertension, high cholesterol and cardiovascular complications.
As scientists continue to pinpoint how to prevent muscle wasting and stop and even remove senescent cells altogether from the body, we can all get involved in slowing aging. Here are a few “elixirs” that can add bonus years of good health:
- Get plenty of sleep.
- Keep as active as possible.
- Lift weights to maintain muscle strength and flexibility.
- Follow a nutritionally balanced diet.
- Stop smoking.
- Practice moderate alcohol consumption.
- Reduce stress through meditation and other relaxing practices.
- Sharpen your mind through social interaction.
