Are Therapies Beneficial for Dementia Patients?

Wide range of group interventions for people with dementia illustrated some creative and innovative work aimed at helping and supporting people with dementia at all stages of severity. Psychological interventions, whether directed at cognitive functioning or emotional expression, are frequently offered on a group basis to people with dementia. Given the increasing number of people now caring for people with dementia in their own home there is a clear need to ensure that research from group activities is transferable to the home setting.

Effective Communication with Dementia Patients During Hospitalization

Nurses caring for patients with dementia will need knowledge of interventions for communicating; managing agitation, nutrition, hygiene, and pain; providing spiritual care; and determining decision-making capacity according to a 2011 article, The Special Needs of the Hospitalized Patient with Dementia in MedSurg Nursing. Tina Weitzel et al point out that approximately 25% of all hospitalized patients over age 75 have dementia as a secondary diagnosis and over the next 30 years, the number of patients with dementia is predicted to double.
