Psychological interventions, whether directed at cognitive functioning or emotional expression, are frequently offered on a group basis to people with dementia. Given the increasing number of people now caring for people with dementia in their own home there is a clear need to ensure that research from group activities is transferable to the home setting.

Nurses caring for patients with dementia will need knowledge of interventions for communicating; managing agitation, nutrition, hygiene, and pain; providing spiritual care; and determining decision-making capacity according to a 2011 article, The Special Needs of the Hospitalized Patient with Dementia in MedSurg Nursing. Tina Weitzel et al point out that approximately 25% of all hospitalized patients over age 75 have dementia as a secondary diagnosis and over the next 30 years, the number of patients with dementia is predicted to double.
