Our Founder’s Story

Allen Hager, President and CEO

While working in hospital administration during the late 1980s and early 90’s, Allen personally witnessed the anguish that clients and families experience while trying to arrange safe, appropriate care for aging or disabled loved-ones.

In Allen’s own words: “At that time, I began to see the enormous boom in Medicare-Paid Home Health care as it was developing. However, I noticed a disturbing trend. “Medicare-Paid Home healthcare took care of the post-acute care hospital stay: it was there long enough to pay for some basic rehab, bandage changes, checking vitals or other medical needs. But after Medicare-Paid Home Health left, you had all these folks who could not deal with their needs of everyday living: getting up and getting dressed, fixing a nutritious meal, remembering to take their medications. I could see a care gap that needed to be filled, and long-term at-home supportive care appeared to be the solution.”

In order to develop a true understanding of how best to deliver these at-home supportive care services, and to better understand the experience from the care recipient’s perspective, Allen did something of which most CEOs would never dream. He completed a certification course, rolled up his sleeves, and took a $7.00 per hour job working as a certified nursing assistant caregiver for nursing homes and senior home healthcare agencies. His reasoning was quite simple- to understand how to develop a system that provides great home care services, you need to experience it from the perspective of the frontline field staff who provide the care, and you need to interact directly with the clients who are receiving the care.

Having learned invaluable lessons from this experience, Allen then took it upon himself to master the intricacies of running a senior home care business. In 1995, he opened the doors to the flagship office of Right at Home in Omaha, NE. Very soon, he realized that this was a service that seniors and disabled individuals could benefit from all over the country.

But instead of hiring management staff to run the business while he sold franchises, Allen spent the next five years living and breathing what every Right at Home franchisee lives and breathes- the daily management of the agency. From hiring caregivers, to making cold calls, to managing receivables, he grew his fledgling agency into one of the largest senior home care agencies in the area.

Allen had the healthcare administration experience of a typical referral source, worked as a caregiver, and stood in the shoes of a homecare agency owner. Then, and only then, the first Right at Home franchise was sold in 2000. Since that day, Allen has never forgotten the important lessons that his humble road to success taught him:

  • The core of this business is understanding and satisfying the clients’ needs.
  • Empathy and sympathy with the caregivers that you hire to perform the actual care is vital to the client’s satisfaction.
  • Your homecare business will thrive once you appreciate the priorities of the referral sources who send the business to your home care business.
  • The home care franchise system will grow if you are careful to award franchises to business people with the right motivations, and then treat them as long-term, individual business partners rather than just another number.

What We Do at Right at Home

At Right at Home our business is to help make a difference in others’ lives. We do this by:

  • Providing Trained, Bonded, Insured Caregivers: We help by arranging for trained, bonded and insured caregivers in the home for as little as a few hours or as much as 24 hours a day. Right at Home caregivers help with the everyday tasks that provide individuals with a safe and secure way to remain independent in their own homes.
  • In Home Care for Severe or Chronic Medical Conditions: Right at Home clients include those with diminished eyesight or hearing, arthritis, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, those recovering from severe medical problems such as cancer or heart disease, or those who are dealing with memory loss or Alzheimer's disease. Many clients have a number of conditions which make the everyday activities of life difficult.
  • Maintaining Quality of Life: With some help, Right at Home clients are relieved of using their energy for simple activities that for them are exhausting ones. They can then begin to use that energy for whatever is, for them, the important things in life: connecting with friends or family, taking a short walk, or perhaps reading a good book.
