Activities For Improving Your Health
From SeniorList.com.
Just because you’re retired doesn’t mean you should ignore your health. And one of the easiest ways to improve your overall well-being is to do a little physical activity or moderate exercise. Sounds like a punishment, right? It doesn’t have to be! There are many activities that can be pleasant to both our health and our happiness.
Walking
You shouldn’t underestimate the value of simply walking. This activity is great for cardiovascular health, weight, and muscles. Plus you have plenty of options. First you can take a stroll around the neighborhood or local park. You can get fresh air and sunshine – enjoy the trees and birds. Raining? No problem, go “mall walking” If you go to the mall you will always see people doing laps. Do this with friends and socialize. In fact, many seniors find that walking with friends is significantly more gratifying than walking alone. Plus this way you will stay motivated and more likely to follow through on commitments to meet on your walking days. Hate driving to the mall? Buy a treadmill. Instead of sitting on the couch while watching your favorite game show, why not walk on the treadmill while the TV is on? This way you can combine activities.
Swimming
One reason swimming is so popular with seniors is because it’s easy on the joints. If you suffer from arthritis or have a trouble knee, than swimming is idyllic for you. Plus you still have options how to enjoy this activity. You can swim laps if you wish or you can join a water-based aerobics class. Many communities provide these classes and here you can meet other seniors as well.
Yoga
This is a great activity for seniors because it can help with flexibility, breathing, alleviation of back trouble and more. Getting started is as easy as joining a class or buying a yoga mat and instructional DVD. Again, joining a class is probably best because anytime you are with other people it helps to keep you motivated.
Golf
There is a reason golf is so widely played. It’s simply a great game to play with friends where you can socialize, move around and enjoy the fresh air. Of course walking the course is better than riding in a cart, but all movement is beneficial. And swinging a golf club helps to move your joints and muscles.
These are just a few ideas to get up and move around so take the time to both enjoy your life and improve your health. Remember – if you can include friends or family in the activity the more enjoyment you are likely to get out of this. Have fun and live well.
