House Approves Cuts Targeting Seniors

Cuts included in the spending bill approved by the House of Representatives last week would harm seniors by drastically slashing initiatives that help them sustain their economic independence and health. NCOA is particularly concerned that the bill includes a 64% cut in the Senior Community Service Employment Program, the only major jobs program targeted specifically to helping disadvantaged older adults who need to remain in or return to the workforce to avoid financial crisis. Other cuts target senior housing by $551 million, community health centers by $1 billion, and low-income home energy assistance by $390 million.
