Elder Loneliness Can Pose Health Threat

July 07, 2011

Does your loved one insist they're fine, even though they sit alone in front of the TV all day?  If you think they're bored, they probably are.  Social interaction needs to be made a high priority.  They might have an anxiety disorder called agoraphobia, which is a fear of leaving the house.  Helping a parent understand that in home care can improve their life, initially might not be easy.  Appeal to their interests.  Caregivers can help mom or dad find new renewed interest in hobbies, discuss politics, read the newspaper together, work a puzzle.

Remind them they're important.  Get your loved one involved in one of many senior volunteering opportunities.  Helping others will prevent them from feeling unwanted or irrelevant.  Communication is key.  It might take multiple conversations.  How can we help?  Right at Home is here for you and your family.  Give us a call today.  One of our trained senior advisors can help you navigate through this potenially difficult time.  Our mission is to improve the quality of life for those we serve.  Helping famies right here in Kansas City.
