Lonely Elders - at Risk for Health Problems
May 10, 2011
Do you worry that your loved one suffers from boredom? Do they claim that going out or having people over is too much trouble? Unless social interaction is made a higher priority in their life, their preference for being alone could evolve into depression or anxiety. In home care/companion sevices could be the greatest move they ever made. Becoming less isolated is important for their overall health. What are their interests? Does your loved one like poker? Bowling? Politics? Go online to find senior groups near them that are centered around their interests. Caregivers from Right at Home can drive and go with them. Remind them they’re important. Try dropping a few hints. Leave relevant literature out where they can find it and then mention specific things they could be enjoying if they made a change — i.e., watching football with friends, playing cards, enjoying healthy meals. It’s one way to get the conversation going, which is a start. Trying to get your loved one to be more active is not always easy and can take time.
