Stress Can Make Caregiving Difficult

June 07, 2011

Most people struggle with some kind of stress.  There are different types of stress, some more difficult than others.  Sometimes when dealing with stress we can feel like things are out of our control.  We feel like there is nothing we can do about it, so we just "deal with it".  This can be unhealthy.

There are a few things we all should know about stress.  There are really only two kinds of stress...stress that you can control and stress that is too tough and you have no sense of control.

Be aware of your stress.  If you feel like it is getting out of control, ask for help.  Communicate with your loved ones.  If you are the primary caregiver for a loved one, you are constantly giving of yourself.  Make sure you find time to deal with your stress.  There are different emotional categories of stress.  They are anger, sadness, worry, fear, and frustration.  Try thinking of your stress on a scale of one to ten.  If you are at the top of the scale it is time to get help.
