April Caregiver of the Month: Kara
With compassion and willingness to "think outside the box," Kara has been a great addition to the Right at Home Team. Her dependability, flexibility, and ability to motivate clients to improve their overall wellness, has all led to accomplishing our mission of improving the quality of life for those we serve. She even exercises along with the client, to get them to that next step!
Kara is a 3rd generation caregiver. She started early, helping out in a nursing home when she was 9 years old. As a child, she was a candy striper. She loved to take care of people so much that she started a career of it, and at 33, she is still doing it. She is a single mother of two great kids, two four legged kids and loves to be around people. She spends a lot of time outdoors when not at work, hiking, attending bonfires, and enjoying time with her kids and friends. Her goal is to become an RN one day and pass on her love for caregiving to her kids!
"You have to take care of each patient the same way you would want your own loved one to be taken care of!"- Kara

October Caregiver of the Month: Sherene
Growing up in a large family she was always the go to person if any siblings had an issue. She is the second of 9 children and was always a caregiver of some sort. As she got older her friends would call her seeking medical advice, having to remind them she not a doctor. She describes herself as a family person and a home body. Her dream was to become a pediatrician and she admired her mother who was a nurse midwife for many years. Being a caregiver is in her blood.
She joined the Army National in 1995 and was given the job as a Medical Specialist, which she loved. She also loves to spend time with her children and friends. Her friends tell her she is a strong person, few people can raise a special needs child and still keep a smile on their face even in her worse moments.
After her first child was diagnosed with Autism in 2002 she became his advocate, and wanted to continue using that passion by caring for others. She has spent the last few years working as a Certified Nursing Assistant in hospitals and in home care. She cares for the geriatric population because they have a great need for us, with many whom do not have someone to be there for them.
“I love working with seniors, I love to see them smile, it gives me a sense of satisfaction to see them happy. I hope one day I get a person like myself to take of my son and myself when that day comes.”
Congratulations Sherene, The Right at Home team is very proud of you!
September Caregiver of the Month:Brittany
Brittany has a true passion for working with the elderly. When Brittany first came to work for us, her only previous job was working at a local day care. She has always had a very close relationship with her grandmother, and she decided that she wanted to go back to school to get her CNA license so she could work with the elderly. Brittany has become a great asset to our caregiver team. She is very reliable, and is always willing to be flexible with her schedule. Our clients love Brittany because she is patient, kind, and compassionate. She always works very hard to provide the best care possible for our clients. Her goal is to eventually become an RN within the elderly community. We are very happy and proud to have Brittany on the Right at Home team.
Here is a quote from one of Brittany's clients:
"Brittany our new caregiver has been consistent, helpful, efficient and continually looking for the next task that will help me. She is both polite and reliable. Brittany has displayed a great work ethic. I am very happy with her present performance and look forward to her next visit. Thank you for this breathe of fresh air."
Congratulations Brittany on being September's Caregiver of the Month, and thank you for your hard work and dedication to your clients!
April Caregiver of the Month: Amber Reeves
I am a Human Services Technology (A.A.S.) student that will be graduating in May 2018 and plan on completing my Bachelor’s Degree through Gardner-Webb University to build towards a career in Social Work. My passion for serving others makes me so thankful for this internship opportunity that allows me to implement my classroom knowledge. I recently completed 175 hours under the leadership of Mr. Dwayne Burks with the Gaston County YMCA where I have enjoyed handling the intake calls for Gateway and attending his 10-week NetworX sessions.
The internship with Mr. Burks has further reinforced my passion for serving others and has lead me to an opportunity to work for Mr. Bill Osborne of Right At Home. Being a caregiver for Right At Home is more than hospice as we serve a range of clients with diverse needs. Through this opportunity, I discovered how much I really enjoy working with the elderly. This work has made me aware that we have elderly people that experience little to no relationship with their family due to time constraints, geographic barriers or other circumstance. I learned that they just want someone to talk to, spend time with them and be there to help with some of their chores and errands that are difficult for them to do by themselves. The biggest reward, is not the care I provide for them, but what I have learned from them such as the value of family relationships; how to be a creative thinker and problem solver, and grow me, interpersonally, as some of the duties push me out of my comfort zone. I am so grateful to be able to make a difference in someone’s life.
When caring and serving others it is so important caregivers engage in hobbies or activities that recharge them so they can continue to be effective and productive in their service. For me, I personally recharge through being outdoors with nature, hiking, music, and painting.
March Caregiver of the Month: Marie
Every day the Right at Home Belmont team works hard to provide quality, compassionate, care for our clients in Gastonia and the surrounding areas. We have seen the best in compassion and teamwork evolve as our Caregivers work together to ensure families have the opportunity to be the wife, mother, granddaughter, to grieve, to laugh, and to try, and not carry the stress and worry of how to be both a loved one and a caregiver. As we experience the complexities of difficult situations others are exposed to in their lives, we begin to see the profound difference Right at Home can make in another life. Dignity for example, is a powerful value that every person, older or younger, deserves and has the right to. We are so proud of our caregivers coming together to make sure dignity endures. Marie Matteo has exemplified the values of teamwork and compassion. Her clients smile when she arrives and occasionally drop a couple of tears when she has to go.
Marie started her career in the Healthcare industry in 1984, because of her desire to help others. She has worked for private and state agencies over many years, she is an example of a positive attitude while caring for others. She has had many hours of training to cover all aspects of in home care as well as facilities. In addition, she has also been a Team leader for Bank of America and Hilton, just to name a few. She has received Perfect Attendance, and Leadership awards while working for those companies. Her genuine compassion and work ethics are appreciated by both her clients and Right at Home.
She enjoys volunteering, and has been awarded several certificates for assisting with special needs children and for an Ombudsmen for a United States Naval vessel. Besides given the seeds of Compassion Award, she was also nominated for the Charlotte Mayor Mentor of the Year Award while volunteering for a Charlotte Children's Home.
She is positive, engaging, hardworking, and flexible with her schedule. We are blessed to have caregivers like Marie and want her to know that we as well as those throughout the community, appreciate her. She sets the example for Right at Home’s Caregivers to follow. It is difficult to recognize just one, when everybody has stepped up to the plate to be there when the time was needed, but we feel like Marie is deserving of Caregiver of the month for March. Thank you, Marie, keep up the strong work. We are proud to have you as part of the Right at Home team!
