While all 50 states in the US have some type of law against elder abuse, the problem still exists. According to the National Council on Aging (NCOA), about ten percent of people aged 60 and above have experienced elder abuse in some form, and “elders who have been abused have a 300% higher risk of death when compared to those who have not been mistreated.”
