Your Heart, How It Works, Common Dysfunctions, and What to Do About Them
Because February is American Heart Month, Right at Home Cedar Rapids Owner Stephanie Humphries' monthly presentation at the Encore' Cafe was on Heart Health.
It began with an overview of the anatomy of the heart and how it works to pump blood throughout the body. It beats 100,000 times and pumps 2,000 gallons of blood every day! It is composed of cardiac muscle and generates its own electricity to initiate each and every heartbeat.
Some common cardiac challenges for older adults were discussed, such as:
- Cardiovascular Disease With or Without Myocardial Infarction (Heart Attack)
- Atrial Fibrillation
- Congestive Heart Failure
All can be treated and well-managed through medication, diet, and healthy lifestyle choices. Some may require surgical intervention or other procedures. Many of these develop as a result of genetics, age, gender, race, and lifestyle choices.
Prevention of these disorders is key through:
- Avoiding Smoking
- Staying Active With Regular Exercise
- Following a Healthy Diet by Limiting High-fat, High-cholesterol Foods
- Getting Enough Restorative Sleep
- Reducing Stress
These guidelines are also very beneficial for reducing the symptoms and progression of the common cardiac challenges. Right at Home caregivers play an important role in helping people follow these guidelines and, therefore, avoiding hospitalizations and admissions into nursing homes.
