We regularly give "Spice Up Your Life" presentations to senior living communities in Eastern Iowa. Recently we had a fun time with the folks at Scott Meadows Independent Living in Marion and we want to share some of the recipes we presented to them.
The object is to incorporate more flavor into our everyday diets with herbs and spices instead of depending on sugar and salt. Many of the foods and flavoring packets we purchase are loaded with sodium. It’s very easy to sprinkle herbs and spices into a simple dish to make it a special treat!
1/8 c dried Parsley leaf
2 tsp Dill leaf
2 tsp Garlic powder
2 tsp onion powder
¼ tsp basil leaf
¼ tsp ground black pepper
Mix together in a jar or food processor.
To make dip:
Mix 1 Tbsp with 1/3 c Greek yogurt or sour cream and enough milk (or coconut milk) for consistency. Adjust spices to taste.
This also makes a wonderful salad dressing simply by thinning with more milk.
Serve with wheat or multi-grain Pita chips
Sweet Mint Iced Tea
For 8 cups:
8 cups hot, boiling water
¼ cup honey
½ tsp vanilla extract
3 bags mint tea
(add some fresh mint for more flavor)
Steep tea bags 10-13 minutes. Remove bags and stir in honey and vanilla. Let cool to room temp, then refrigerate.
Don’t have mint tea? You can add a few drops of mint extract!
