I had an interesting chat yesterday with one of our caregivers, Patty. She began by saying how she did not feel up to going to her early shift that day. She hadn’t slept well the night before and just wanted to sleep in awhile longer. Patty said she debated whether or not she wanted to go see one of her long-time, regular clients, Dorothy. Ultimately, she decided to “suck it up” and go see Dorothy because she knew Dorothy needed a shower before her appointment and that she would not want any other caregiver to help her.
In Patty’s words, “THANK GOODNESS I made the decision to go! Dorothy was totally out of it, her blood pressure was super low, and I ended up taking her to the hospital where they discovered she was severely dehydrated which we all know what that can do to the elderly.”
Patty then explained how Dorothy received the care and fluids she needed and was able to return home to rest.
“Who knows what would have happened if I had called in for my shift?” Patty lamented.
She knew Dorothy would have declined a replacement and no one would have seen her for two more days.
“ANYTHING could have happened to her!” Patty continued.
Patty said she learned a very valuable lesson about being there for her clients, and making the decision whether or not to call in for future shifts. I absolutely love this true story because it shows how much the elderly need us and how important it is to just SHOW UP. Patty does a great job for us day in and day out and that is the type of caregiver that works at Right at Home.
