Boomer Expectations in Retirement
The boomer generation grew up in the ‘60s, an era that was full of experimentation. At their prime during the ‘70s, they were filled with political awareness. Boomers are more open about how they feel and what they want in life. Many of them desire to live differently than their parents and grandparents did. They believe in a freedom that was never discussed previously.
Stereotypes of Aging
But as this generation advances in age—with more than 77 million of them approaching their 60s and 70s, people’s perception of aging and seniors has very little change. Senior citizens are associated with physical and/or mental ailments, illnesses, nursing homes, assisted living and independent living facilities.
Boomers, on the other hand, are determined to enjoy their golden years at the comfort of their own homes for as long as possible—researches show a majority of them prefer to age in place. Today, many boomers continue to lead an active lifestyle and are not ready to “conform to the imagination of old age.” They want independence and to preserve their lifestyle.
They are keen on home improvements and delaying retirement (some also opt for “semi-retirement”). Boomers are also more health-conscious – as health care costs continue to rise, this generation is not sitting back to follow their previous generations’ footstep to take whatever that is offered. They are proactive in preparing for and managing challenges they face.
In-Home Care Enables Boomers to Age in Place
As advancement in medical science promotes longevity and health span, boomers are going to live longer than their preceding generations. With a surge in the costs of retirement, many of them are beginning to seek cost-saving alternatives when they are in need.
Technologies play a major role in helping them age graciously— for example, sensors and remote healthcare monitor systems are mushrooming in recent years, healthcare services by phone and visiting healthcare professionals are becoming more common, wearables and smart devices allow boomers to connect with loved ones who may not live close by…
Home care and home health care services that support temporary, as well as more long-term needs of people with health conditions are also more available to assist boomers.
