Connie Hanson, Right at Home Caregiver in Shaker Heights, Ohio Provides Resources for Area Seniors
Hi, I’m Connie Hanson. I’ve lived in Shaker Heights for 35 years and worked for Right at Home for one and a half years. I hope you enjoy hearing about my favorite places in Shaker Heights!
Here is a picture of my colleague, Right at Home Cleveland owner Shalom Plotkin and I enjoying a ride in the ‘rocket car’ together! We had a blast touring the city.
Shaker Heights Senior Living Options
I have supported my clients who are living independently at Myers Towers, the Atrium Two, and Windsor Hts. Alzheimer's and Memory Care. Windsor Hts. has a nicely contained courtyard for outdoor relaxation as well as a highly trained staff. One of my favorite activities to do with my clients is to cook dinner together and make cinnamon kugels (a sweet noodle casserole).
The Woodlands of Shaker Heights has a very nice ice cream parlor which is great for making memories! Speaking of memories, Right at Home is a sponsor of ‘Glorias Way Memory Care Cafe’ which aims to provide respite for seniors with dementia along with a care partner. This support group meets on the second Tuesday of every month.
Shaker Heights Activities and Restaurants
I enjoy driving clients to various activities! A fan favorite is visiting the free Watercolor Gallery at Ursuline College. In addition, lunching with the Red Hat Society ladies has been a ball, especially the times we went to Moxie’s, Jack’s Deli, Abuelo’s, and Yours Truly of Shaker Square.
Some of my favorites from Yours Truly restaurant include omelets, YT burgers, quesadillas, and to top it off, guests can enjoy a brownie hot fudge sundae or a hand-dipped milkshake. Another one of my favorite restaurants is Pearl Asian Kitchen which offers delicious lunch specials such as sweet and sour chicken. I also love Wendy’s and I share my fries with my dog, Gilligan.

New Van Aken Shopping District
► On November 9th, the Authentic Diversity Group will be screening ‘Dispatches from Cleveland’ at the First Unitarian Church of Cleveland. This film combines trauma and triumph while demonstrating how voter engagement can build strength and make change a reality. Also, our newest shopping district is Van Aken and it is located at the end of the Blue Rapid Line.
► On Saturday, October 27, 1-3 PM, be prepared to get sweet as Tuttle Road becomes Treat Street! You can even bring your four legged friends to collect treats from our new shop owners.
► Finally, join us for Knit Night on November 14, 7-8:45 PM. This fun group of knitters and crocheters create a warm environment to give and receive help with projects and just have a good time. All experience and ability levels welcome. Led by experienced yarn woman Fern Braverman.
Shaker Heights Wellness
In my opinion, one of the best hospitals in town is Hillcrest Hospital, but the sniffles are no match for my local Walgreens. Thankfully, Shaker Hts. has subsidized a personal emergency alert button and Senior Transportation Connection. Another perk of living in Shaker Hts. is the Meals on Wheels program where I have been volunteering. Here is another tip; the Arthritis Foundation in cooperation with Judson Wellness Center also sponsors exercise classes at the Stephanie Tubbs Jones Community Building.

Shaker Heights Houses of Worship
My church is St. Paul’s Episcopal and we are a friendly bunch! Plus, every Thursday from 6:30-8:00 PM you can join us for an energetic Tai Chi class! Father Tom, at St. Dominic, gives uplifting Catholic homilies that speak to everyone’s souls’.
In addition, at Green Road Modern Orthodox Synagogue, Rabbi Blau is inviting Professor Nechama Price to lead a Women’s only study session about Jewish law. This special class will take place on November 3 and you can call the synagogue for more information.
I have lived here in Shaker Heights for 35 years and I have no plans to go anywhere other than Florida for the Winter. If you would like to share your favorite senior hangouts with me, give me a call, 216-752-2222! Shameless plug, this is Right at Home’s award that we earned for excellence in customer satisfaction. I hope you enjoy everything Shaker Heights has to offer!
