What is Personal Care?

Caregiver wearing PPE assisting senior client with hair grooming

For clients requiring a higher level of physical assistance, personal care includes all available services under companion care, plus specialized assistance with one or more of the six basic Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), as defined below:

  • Ambulation/Mobility, including transferring from bed to chair and back
  • Bathing
  • Dressing
  • Eating
  • Grooming, including oral hygiene
  • Toileting and Incontinence Care

Because of the increased physical interaction and potential for complexity when providing personal care, Right at Home requires all of our care providers to have CNA (certified nursing assistant) or equivalent level training and/or experience, affording an added level of assurance that they understand how to interact safely with a frail older person. However, there is more to providing quality care than safety alone.

"I Want To Do It All By Myself"

We can all relate to those words, first heard from young children as they savor their newfound ability to function independently. Clearly that sense of wanting to be independent and self-reliant doesn't go away as we get older. The process of helping seniors retain their dignity and self-worth as their care needs increase is a delicate walk.

At Right at Home, we recognize that, no matter the age, there is a strong desire to be able to continue to manage one's own personal care, particularly in the areas of bathing, toileting, dressing, and grooming. Family members may also struggle when confronted with the need to step in and assist a loved one with, or perform tasks related to, hygiene. Understanding the sensitivity around privacy and modesty is the first step in successfully assisting with personal care.

Our staff is hired based on their experience, knowledge and ability to demonstrate sensitivity and empathy with our clients. An in-depth interview by two of our senior managers prior to hire consists of several "situational" questions and helps to assure that our personal care staff are well-suited for their work in the home.

A Team Approach

Our approach to personal care services is to encourage self-care to the extent possible by providing guidance, cueing and assistance at the minimal level required. The goal is for clients to continue to perform as many of their care tasks as possible, with caring assistance. Patience and allowing ample time to complete personal care are key to a successful relationship between client and caregiver.
