Ashley Currie discusses her career at Right at Home
Ashley Currie, of the Greater Pittsburgh office, has been with Right at Home since 2005. She started as a caregiver, spending 5 years working with people in their homes. It was a job she truly enjoyed. “I like caring for people. I liked it because it was something new for me. I enjoy going into different people's homes, instead of a facility. I'm not just going to a facility to be sent down a hall to take care of ten people. I'm getting in the home, getting to learn people's needs, what they want, how they want it done, and direct my care to one person.”
Today, she is the Office Manager, with overall responsibility for over a hundred people between staff and caregivers. She’s extremely happy to be in that position. “Honestly, the company is very welcoming. There are stair steps. You can start at a lower position and work your way up. I started out in the field, and made my way to the office and don't have any intentions of leaving. I love it. I wouldn't change it for anything.”
Opportunities for Caregivers
She believes that it takes a special person to be a caregiver. “I believe you have to have it in your heart to care for others. It takes a loving person, a person that is willing to go above and beyond for other people, somebody who puts other's needs before their own needs. I would say you have to be client-driven.”
Ashley outlined some of the benefits of being a Right at Home caregiver:
- Schedule: “It's basically what you want to do,” she said. “If you want to work two hours to 20 hours a week or if you want to do 40 to 80 hours a week. You have that flexibility. Whether it's daylight, overnight, weekends, you can really work when you want to work.”
- Type of work: She explained, “You can come in and do direct personal care, chores and homemaking, or if you just want to do companion. We also have a heavy chore team so you would do no hands-on just heavy-duty cleaning. You have that as an option as well.”
- Paychecks: “We get paid weekly, Every Friday.”
“In other words,” she said, “you can basically come in, set your own schedule, decide what type of work you want to do, and get paid weekly to do so.”
