Our Story: Right at Home Napa

Carol Brohmer RN and Robert Brohmer LMFT

We are both native Californians returning to our roots and aging family after living in the Portland, Oregon area. Our Napa office is a locally owned and operated adult/senior home care agency. Our mission is to improve the quality of life for those we serve. We do that by providing the highest quality in-home caregivers.

We are excited to bring our skills, experience, and lifelong desire to serve our community to Napa. We are eager to assist those who desire the opportunity to stay in their current environment, whether in a home or a community setting, and to minimize unnecessary moves.

Carol's Story

I am a registered nurse and a certified hospice volunteer. I feel like I was born with a special place in my heart for older adults. When I was twelve I spent three years providing relief over-night care for an elderly neighbor. At fifteen I worked in a continuum care retirement community as a server in the dining room, which led me to working in an extended care hospital as a nurse’s aide. As an aide, I was bitten by the nursing “bug” and moved from the San Francisco Peninsula to Santa Rosa, to pursue nursing. Marriage and family delayed my plans, but eventually I accomplished my goal.  I am delighted to be back in Santa Rosa and Sonoma County living out my life's passion.

Upon becoming a nurse, my primary experience was in surgery, but my heart continued to long to help the elderly. Having experienced the final years of my mother’s life helped me see how important it is to honor the wishes of a loved one, while helping the family mentally and physically.

Robert's Story

I have been involved in the helping field most of my life. While earning my BA in theology I worked in youth ministries. In my early 30’s I completed my Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy from Azusa Pacific University and began my career as a therapist.

After completing my internship I moved to Del Norte County and began working in the Mental Health Department, primarily with children and families, but also expanded into elder care. I also provided mental health evaluations in conjunction with the Department of Social Services, in both home and facility settings. As a result I was invited to sit on the Area I Agency on Aging which oversaw the Medicaid Waiver programs like Meals on Wheels and other supportive programs for the elderly in Humboldt and Del Norte Counties. At that time I also started working directly with a psychiatrist in providing geriatric evaluations. This was very satisfying because of the significant increase in the quality of life I saw by insuring that our clients were receiving proper medical care.

In my 40’s I moved to Portland and started my administrative career with non-profit agencies. I worked with Albertina Kerr Centers as the Director of Community Services. I managed the Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities Foster Care programs. These included in-home support, much like what we provide now. Our goal then, as it is now, is keeping people in the most home-like setting possible.
