Five Fun and Safe Things to Do During This Summer
Five Fun and Safe Things to Do During This Summer
So, let’s get this fact out of the way! THIS summer is like no other summer before! Sure, it’s hot and the days are longer but that’s about the only similarity. The COVID-19 pandemic has made many of the activities we used to enjoy in the summer months a thing of the past. But that doesn’t mean that we can’t have fun!
Here are five things that your aging friends and family members can do safely on their own or with others:
Enjoy the outdoors
As we in the northeast know, “winter will come soon enough” and so take advantage of the warm weather and enjoy time outdoors. That means wearing sunscreen and staying in the shade when the temperatures climb, but fresh air is always good and offers the safest way to be in the company of others. Time in the backyard or at a local park, water bottle in hand, is a great way to spend some hours and enjoy nature.
Watch a movie or play
The pandemic has prompted theater companies and movie distributors to put some of their productions on Netflix or other cable channels. There are shows that will appeal to almost every interest and you can even arrange a “watch party” where everyone can watch the same production and come together for a Zoom call to discuss the performance or movie.
Light gardening is good exercise and fun too
You don’t need to have a veritable “green thumb” to enjoy puttering around in the garden. Whether it’s flowers to grace your table or vegetables to enjoy at mealtime, gardening provides a wonderful opportunity to be outside and be productive too!
Read a Summer-themed book and have a book discussion on Zoom
A quick search on Google will point the way to books that have a summer “theme” and can be the basis for a Zoom call or a small socially distant gathering to discuss the book. Reading a book is not a diversion that is limited to summer; however, it can be one of the most enjoyable things you can do on a hot summer day.
Start a “Summer” hobby
Having a hobby that you enjoy doing alone or with others can be an enjoyable way to pass a few hours. Taking photographs of flowers, playing golf, or going fishing are just a few of the things that are best enjoyed in the summer and can be done safely.
The key words this summer is “doing it safely” and a Right at Home companion can help your senior stay busy and occupied while at the same time staying safe and secure.
