Father’s Day and Senior Fathers
Sometimes it’s difficult to find the right gift for Dad on Father’s Day. It might even be more difficult if your Father is a senior because older people are often giving things away, not adding to them. One thing though that parents always enjoy is time with their children. So, that something that you could give your Father on his special day is your time and love. But where to spend that time?
For a Father who loves the outdoors
Many men like to do activities which involve the outdoors. So, if your Dad plays golf, he would probably love to play a game with you. Or if you’re not really a golfer, mini-golf could be just as fun.
Some other things to do would be to take a walk through a park or along a nature trail. You could even do some bird watching together as you walk along. Or just taking a stroll through the neighborhood to see what changes the neighbors have done to their homes or yards might be fun.
On the other hand, if your Father is a car buff, finding a local car show might be the thing to do. There are usually many shows around the time of year Father’s Day falls that specialize in classic cars or even muscle cars. Dad might even see something that he drove when he was younger where he could tell you stories that you would both enjoy.
Your Dad might also enjoy going to a museum or a historical reenactment. Many places have reenactments which might be just what your father would love to watch. History brought to life is something that gets the attention of a history buff.
For a Father who prefers indoors or can’t go outdoors for health reasons
If your Father prefers to stay inside or can’t leave the house for health reasons, there are still some enjoyable things that you can do together. For example, having a sports day with snacks, drinks and his favorite sport on TV is one of them. You could even order a pizza for some extra flair.
Or having the family come over for a backyard BBQ with everyone bringing a covered dish is another idea. So spending time with his loved ones could be the best Father’s Day gift that you could think of.
Another idea is to rent a new release that he’s been wanting to see, or sit with him and watch his favorite old movie complete with popcorn. Additionally, if your Dad likes to play card games or board games, dust them off and sit down and play a couple of rounds.
If your Father is in a nursing home
If your Father’s in a nursing home, you could plan an outing for a few hours. Make sure whatever you decide to do that he doesn’t feel rushed. If he needs a cane or walker, make sure that you bring them also. In addition, take along a jacket for him, some sunscreen and a hat to keep the sun off his face.
Somethings that you could do also are to take him to a beach or lake that’s close by. Make sure that it has a place for walking or that it has a boardwalk. The fresh, exhilarating air will do him good as will the bustle of people walking by.
Or you could go on a picnic at a park. In addition, some parks have Little League baseball games or playgrounds. He might enjoy watching children running around, laughing and having fun.
One of the things that your Father may find enjoyable additionally is telling you about his childhood and teenage years. By sharing his family history, it’s also telling you about yours.
You don’t always have to buy presents on Father’s Day. Sometimes thoughtfully spent time is more than enough to make your Dad happy.
