Rather than move into an assisted living facility or nursing home, many seniors are determined to “age in place” and remain as independent as possible. The wisdom surrounding this decision is contingent on many factors, including the following three important factors:
Does the senior have any major chronic medical issues?
If the senior requires 24-hour skilled nursing care as well as regular medical intervention that may necessitate special equipment and medical expertise, it is quite probable that they will do best in a facility that can provide them with immediate easy access to all of the necessary equipment and medical specialists.
Does the senior suffer from dementia or Alzheimer’s disease?
While staying at home can offer comfort to a senior suffering from memory loss, their ability to live at home can become untenable depending upon the severity of their disease and whether they pose a danger to themselves and to others living in the home.
Is the senior fairly healthy and mobile?
When a senior is still healthy, mobile and cognizant of their surroundings, the very best place for them is at home where they are comfortable and surrounded by the things they love and enjoy. Depending upon their needs, a home health aide can be in the home full or part-time, 7 days per week or any number of days that makes sense for the situation.
Right at Home Nassau Suffolk is capable of providing home care that works for the senior and provides the family with peace of mind and confidence that their senior loved one is being cared for by a competent and caring individual.
Unfortunately, there is no fast answer. This is a complex decision that will impact the health and well-being of the senior and it must be made with care. Everyone’s situation is different and that’s why we at Right at Home do not have a “cookie cutter” approach.
