Dementia Friendly Barrington

There is an old saying that you can never really understand someone unless you've walked a mile in their shoes. You'll see how true this is when experiencing just a small part of the life of someone with dementia.

Historically someone in the United States develops Alzheimer’s disease every minute. The most common form of dementia, Alzheimer's, affects hundreds of thousands of Illinois seniors.

The Dementia Friendly Barrington initiative was introduced in May of 2021 and Right at Home of Barrington has been working with the Barrington Area Council on Aging to raise awareness throughout the community since then. Right at Home is proud to be a part of this initiative and work together to bring awareness and assistance to those in our area.

We're working to raise awareness so people are more comfortable to seek help before they reach their breaking point. By providing training and support, we can help reduce the stress families affected by dementia are experiencing. In addition to creating a team to provide cognitive support to families we care for, owner Jeanette, has experience providing Dementia training to the First Responders in our area.

What is Dementia Friendly Barrington

Barrington, Illinois is now a nationally recognized Dementia Friendly Community, Dementia Friendly Barrington. The Vision Statement:

The Barrington community is aware that dementia affects much more than an individual and its family. We want to reduce the stigma of dementia and raise awareness of the disease. Our entire community has been sculpted by individuals who have for years made it what it is today and those individuals need to be treated with respect and dignity and given the ability to stay in their homes and interact with others. We have already seen a great response to creating a Dementia Friendly Community from a very diverse group of individuals, organizations and businesses in the area.

We can all become more aware and have a better understanding of what it means to have dementia. This is what it means to become a dementia friend. Want to become a dementia friend?
