Personal Care Assistant - PCA (Morgantown)

Job Summary

Provides a variety of personal care services in accordance with an established plan of care. Attends to the personal needs and comfort of patients in their homes providing for the maintenance of a safe and clean environment.  Performs various housekeeping tasks, meal preparation and companionship activities for clients in their residences.

Essential Functions:

  • Adheres to all Right at Home policies and procedures.        
  • Performs work under the supervision of the Staffing Coordinator, Nursing Supervisor, and the Operations Manager.
  • Performs personal care activities as contained within the written assignment in the Care Plan contained within the Client Home Record and/or ClearCare which includes, but is not limited to, assisting the patient with activities of daily living, such as:

•  Personal hygiene (assisting to bathroom or in using bedpan,  bathing, care of mouth , skin and hair)
•  Ambulation
•  Eating
•  Dressing
•  Shaving
•  Meal Preparation

  •  The Personal Care Assistant is responsible for documentation of service provided, using the PCA Weekly Care Record, Daily Care Record and/or the ClearCare EMR as needed.
  • Reports all client condition changes immediately to Supervisor and or Nursing Supervisor by phone as well as documenting in the client record and ClearCare.
  • Performs other assigned activities within scope of  knowledge when specified within the written Care Plan as required by client and approved by supervisor.  These activities include but not limited to:

•  Assisting with the use of devices for aid to daily living (cane, walker, wheelchair or lift device)
•  Assisting with prescribed range of motion exercises
•  Measuring and preparing special diets

  •  The Personal Care Assistant performs light housekeeping tasks which will facilitate the patient’s self-care at home.  These tasks include, but are not limited to:

•  vacuuming
•  dusting
•  sweeping or mopping floors
•  doing dishes
•  laundry
•  cleaning bathrooms

  •  The Personal Care Assistant will NOT perform any of the following:

•  Heavy duty household cleaning such as washing walls, washing or waxing floors on hands and knees, washing windows etc. which require climbing on a ladder or dangerous heights.
•  Household repairs or maintenance
•  Yard care or maintenance

  • The Personal Care Assistant should not contact the physician directly. All questions or reports are referred directly to the Staffing Coordinator, Nursing Supervisor.
  • The Personal Care Assistant will not perform tasks outside their trained and documented scope of knowledge as demonstrated by a nurse validated competency.

Additional (non-essential) Functions:

  • Performs other duties as directed by the supervisor.
  • May be called upon to perform additional tasks as required by client and approved by supervisor.

Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Availability:

•  High school graduate preferred (G.E.D certificate equivalent).
•  The ideal candidate will have six months experience as a Personal Care Assistant in health care (in homes or facilities) and successful completion of a State approved Nurse Aide, Personal Care Assistant or Personal Care Assistant course preferred.
•  The Personal Care Assistant must complete Right at Home’s Training and Orientation Program as well as the 90 day probationary period.
•  Must possess a sympathetic attitude toward the care of the sick and ability to deal effectively with the demands of the job.
•  Current CPR and First Aid Certificate is required–or the willingness and ability to obtain such certification within six months of employment.
•  Must provide a clear, professionally performed and recorded TB test result.
•  Must understand the needs and characteristics of the elderly, handicapped, or convalescing individuals.
•  Meets the health requirements for employees providing direct patient care as documented by a physician on the Right at Home Health Statement form.
•  Read, write, speak and understand English as needed for the job.
•  Have valid driver’s license and use of an insured automobile for work or access to adequate transportation. 

Working Environment:

Primarily works a certain number of hours or shifts in clients’ place of residence, travel required. Shift times and days vary with client needs. 

In-Service Training:

The Personal Care Assistant will receive at least twelve hours of in-service training per year (or as many as required by State law) as documented in the Right at Home University, the employee file, any other method employed and monitored by the Staffing Coordinator/Operations Manager.  The skills training and validation may be performed while the Personal Care Assistant is providing care to patients.  Other continued education may be completed as computer based training, classroom style, or other opportunities as offered and approved by Right at Home.
