Right at Home Hosts First Open House in New Space!

Marissa VanDyck (Right, Office Manager) and Rachel Smith (Left, HR Supervisor) present the winner of the Open House raffle, Lyndsay Navarro (Branch Manager, Caregiver Homes) with the raffle basket she won in our drawing.

Dozens of local members of the community recently attended Right at Home of Northwest Indiana’s first open house in our new, bigger and better, office space. Attendees were able to view the new space, meet our fantastic team, and learn more about our new Caregiver Learning Lab.

Grand opening eventWe were thrilled to see so many familiar faces and to meet some new friends too,” said owner Marc Sokol. “We are honored to be able to provide what we call the ‘gold standard’ in northwest Indiana home care, and we’re excited that so many of our community partners had an opportunity to visit our new expanded space, which will allow us to enhance the quality of our services even more.

Guests enjoyed seeing the Caregiver Learning Lab, which comes equipped with multiple pieces of durable medical equipment that caregivers routinely use. “Having this Learning Lab will allow our caregivers to practice and refine their skills in an atmosphere similar to what they will experience in the field,” Sokol said.

In addition, guests learned more about what differentiates Right at Home from other providers in the northwest Indiana home care market, including that we are family owned and operated, that all prospective caregivers must pass a live skills exam conducted by our registered nurse, that our caregivers have opportunities for promotions, pay raises, paid time off, and paid training, and that we offer specialized services like live-in services and Alzheimer’s and dementia care.

The Right at Home team is excited that our new office suite has the space for us to conduct regular caregiver training sessions. “Specialized training is something we really pride ourselves on in terms of investing in our employees,” owner Kristin Sokol said.

If you missed the open house but still want to visit us and see our Learning Lab, please contact our Community Relations Manager, Melissa DeSutter at or 219.730.2850.

Warming Up to Winter

Keeping Seniors Safe From Cold

senior coupleBrrrrr! If you live in Northwest Indiana, you know what winter can bring. Besides lake effect snow, the temperatures can be life-threatening at times, especially for our vulnerable senior population. Because skin and blood vessels change with age, older adults are at risk for hypothermia — even indoors. Here are some tips for how to keep seniors warm and safe this winter:

  • Keep the home properly heated at a temperature of at least 68 F to 70 F
  • Winterize windows and doors with weather stripping and caulk
  • Seniors should dress in warm layers that can be removed and wear a hat, scarf, and gloves when going outside
  • Have seniors change out of damp or wet clothes right away. Help your loved ones practice sound nutrition to fuel their bodies’ heat and energy sources
  • Encourage vulnerable seniors to avoid alcohol consumption, which can trigger heat loss
  • Learn the temperature-lowering effect of specific medications and over-the-counter drugs
  • Devise an evacuation plan in case of a power outage or the furnace/heat source breaks down

For information about cold weather safety for older adults, contact Eldercare Locator at 800-677-1116 (toll-free) or, or the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging at 202-872-0888, or

Caregiver Spotlight

Caregiver of the MonthPlease join us in congratulating our October 2018 Caregiver of the Month, Valerie Mallette! Valerie was named Team Player of the Month in March of this year and has been named an All-Star every month of 2018 since April. She worked nearly every day in October with multiple clients. When one of her regular clients was hospitalized and then sent to a rehabilitation center for a couple of months, Valerie stayed busy by picking up extra shifts with her other clients and covering emergency shifts for new ones. She has repeatedly been praised by her clients and their families for her work ethic and dependability, and we always know we can count on Valerie to complete every shift she accepts.

Like our best caregivers, Valerie never misses a clock-in or out and is diligent in turning in her care notes each week. Valerie, a huge thank you for delivering the “gold standard” of care to your clients and for being an outstanding caregiver.

As a reward for earning the Caregiver of the Month award, Valerie will be awarded a $100 bonus, given Right at Home apparel, have her name engraved on the Caregiver of the Month plaque in our office, and receive company-wide recognition.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Right at Home Northwest Indiana would like to wish a Happy Thanksgiving to all of our clients, caregivers, friends, family, and staff.
