Celebrating Caregivers
November is National Family Caregiver month, in honor of the 44 million Americans who provide care around the country. In observance of National Caregivers Month is a time for everyone to celebrate and bring awareness to the growing challenges family caregivers face. In addition, it’s a time for us to provide help and support to those in need. This year’s theme is around caregivers who provide around-the-clock care for a loved one.
Emotional Impact of Being a Caregiver
Being a caregiver comes with a lot of psychological and emotional problems. According to the Family Caregiver Alliance, among those include higher levels of stress, anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues.
Physical Impact of Being a Caregiver
Caregiving can be highly stressful, especially when caring for someone who is disabled or suffers from diseases such as Parkinson’s disease or Alzheimer’s disease so commonly developed in seniors. The physical toll can often be laborious as the job may require the caregiver to do a lot of bending, lifting, and transferring. The consequences of such actions include:
- Middle and lower back pain
- Joint issues in areas such as your knee
- Pain and difficulty standing up over time
- High blood pressure
