Summer Fun With Your Senior Clients
With summer in full swing, it’s a great time to change up some of the activities you do with your senior clients. Celebrating the season, and embracing its uniqueness, is perfect for keeping your clients engaged and energized. Find out what they love about summer, get creative, get outside and get out there and enjoy the sunny season with them.
Here are some summer fun ideas to do safely with your clients.
If they can, bring your senior client outdoors for a leisurely stroll. Grab a wide brimmed hat, ensure they have sunscreen on or sun-protective clothing, and go discover the neighborhood. Go each week, and see what new blooms are up. See how many kids are playing at the park. Say hello to all of the neighborhood dogs out for walks. Get out there and enjoy the day.
Whether it’s a toe dip in a kiddie pool and wading in a lake, nothing says summer like getting your feet wet. If you’re looking for an actual pool, many health clubs and pools have special hours and water aerobics classes for senior citizens. See what they can handle, and see if they’re up for the adventure.
Several local towns hold farmers markets each week. You can find your closest one here. They sell fresh and unique produce, and other items. Go stroll around and have your senior client pick out something they’d like to try.
If they can’t make it to the market themself, go run an errand for them. Get fresh fruits and veggies and help them make a summer salad at home.
If your senior client is used to eating their meals at the kitchen table, switch it up a little bit. Bring them outside for a summer picnic. Eating food outside just makes it taste a little better. It’ll switch up the routine and make it a fun meal for your senior.
To give your senior some physical activity this summer, help them plant and tend to a vegetable garden. Choose their favorites, and after planting, take them outside each day to check on the progress.
No matter how old you are, bubbles can always bring a smile to your face. Sit outside with your senior, blow some bubbles, and have them work on hand eye coordination by trying to bat the bubbles. Switch roles, and have them blow the bubbles for you to swat at.
Even if you can’t hike a national park, there are plenty of sites to see right in the backyard. Take your senior outside, and see what birds you see flying or roosting in trees. Check out the bugs that crawl across the patio. Have your senior clients listen to the sounds around them, and see if they can identify what and where they are coming from.
Take a drive to the local ice cream shop with your senior, and pick out a fun flavor to sample. If they can’t head out, bring the ice cream to them. Scoop up a cone and enjoy it in the backyard beneath the summer sun.
Harken back to their childhood days, and help your senior fly a kite. They can even do it sitting down. The thrill of seeing the kite rise up is exciting, and also helps your senior get some arm exercise in.
Change up the wardrobe or hairstyle for summer. Help dress your senior in bright summery colors. If the heat is getting to them, braid their hair in a cute summer style or put it up in a bun. Grab a wide brimmed summer hat from the closet and sit out in the yard with your senior client. Change it up for some fun.
