Emergency Preparedness
What would happen if the help you rely on is unable to come during a storm? For most people, this would not be a problem. However, for those who are dependent on another's help, it could lead to disaster if not sufficiently prepared. Rain or shine, our priority is keeping our seniors safe no matter the weather. If your caregiver is delayed due to weather conditions, follow the three steps of preparedness outlined by The Red Cross.
- Get a Kit
- Make a Plan
- Be Informed
These steps are simple, given that they are followed closely. As for the first step, preparing a kit means that any medication, food, water, or other necessary tools for survival are readily available to you, easy to access, and in a location that you will remember. If the power were to go out during a storm, you would need to know where your kit was located, without having to search high and low for it. If you do have caregivers coming to your house regularly, they could help you assemble your kit so that you are prepared if catastrophe strikes.
Secondly, making a plan is an essential part of emergency preparedness. Your plan could be as simple as grabbing your kit and moving to the basement, a closet, or even a bathroom without windows. Your plan should outline what you should do or who you should call in the event that your house begins to flood or if the power goes out. Your emergency preparedness plan should also include your emergency contacts.
Lastly, being informed means to know in advance what natural disasters could happen near where you live, whether it be flooding, wildfires, tornados, thunderstorms, earthquakes, etc. Be prepared for the natural disasters that have the possibility of occurring in your area. Find a reliable news or radio station that will give you updated weather information so that you are always well informed if the weather changes.
At Right at Home, we strive to make our seniors as prepared as possible for any unforeseen circumstances that may arise. Having a plan prior to a situation arising helps prevent stress and worry that could come from being ill prepared. It is always better to be safe than sorry. We also recommend that each of our clients register with 211, an emergency line in San Antonio for people who may need to be rescued in a disaster type situation. Allow Right at Home to help your beloved seniors be prepared for the stormy seasons ahead!
