Keeping It Cool
As the temperature continues to rise each day, it is crucial that we know the health risks that could occur due to not knowing how to keep our bodies cool. Our elderly neighbors, senior family members, and aging acquaintances are at a higher risk because their bodies cannot adjust to hot temperatures as they used to when they were younger. Along with older age and body temperature, chronic medical conditions can weaken regular body processes and make people, especially the elderly, more susceptible to heat illnesses.
There are many tips and tricks that can help reduce the risk of extreme heat. A few examples are listed below:
- Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated throughout the day
- Eat cool snacks like popsicles or frozen grapes to beat the heat
- Use a cool washcloth on the back of your neck to cool off and lower your body temperature
- Keep the house at a reasonably cool temperature
- Wear lighter colored clothing and cotton fabrics, avoid dark clothing and heavy clothing materials
- Take a cold shower or soak in a cool bath
At Right at Home, we can help care for you or your elderly family members and friends in times of excessive heat. Our caregivers are ready to help you beat the heat by making cool drinks to stay refreshed, preparing frozen snacks, and helping you dress for warmer weather in lighter, cooler clothing.
