Dehydration Signs, Symptoms, and Prevention
Dehydration Is Dangerous for Everyone, Especially Seniors
Imagine that it’s summertime and you’ve just finished working in the garden for two hours, with the hot afternoon sun beating down on your back. Once back inside, you realize how parched you are and get to work pouring yourself a glass of ice cold water. You most likely know this strong feeling of thirst but as you age, your sense of thirst diminishes. So even when your body needs to be replenished with water, you might not realize it. Because of this, many older adults do not drink enough liquids.
Don't Wait Until It's Too Late
By the time an elderly adult is thirsty, they are already showing symptoms of dehydration. Consequently, dehydration is one of the common causes of hospitalization among the elderly population. It is imperative to stay hydrated because water has many essential functions throughout the body. For example, it lubricates the joints, forms saliva and mucus, helps deliver oxygen throughout the body, cushions the brain and spinal cord, and regulates body temperature. Not getting enough water can have serious consequences.
What Are Dehydration Symptoms In Seniors?
Often, the symptoms of dehydration go unrecognized. Early signs of dehydration include dry mouth, fatigue, muscle cramps, dizziness, or low pressure. One way to tell if you are well-hydrated is to assess the color of your urine. If your body is dehydrated, you will likely have dark colored urine, however, if you are drinking enough fluids then your urine will be clear to light yellow in color. As you get older, these signs may be easy to confuse with the natural effects of aging or responses to medications. The best way to prevent any confusion as to whether you are hydrated or not, is to simply drink eight eight-ounce glasses of water each day.
Tips To Avoid The Danger To Seniors
If drinking water is becoming too mundane, try mixing it with your favorite fruit juice. Sometimes juices can be high in sugar though, so if you are going to mix it with water try a 50/50 mixture method. Taking small sips of water throughout the day is better than drinking a full glass in one sitting. Try to purchase a nice mug or tumbler that you are always able to carry around and keep with you. This will encourage you to stay hydrated while keeping essential fluids close at hand.
