In what way do men approach caregiving different than women?

Ben Solomon and Don Desonier

Ben met with Don Desonier, an attorney turned caregiver advocate, who shared his life journey after his wife, Nancy, was diagnosed with early on-set dementia. Don describes the unique challenges that male caregivers often have and their need to express and experience grief, vulnerability, feelings of inadequacy or loss.

Don describes caring for one with dementia as "ambiguous loss", and the habit that many men have in compartmentalizing their emotions and feelings.

Don works with families and professionals on supporting their loved ones who have dementia through his company, Transitions in Dementia Care. If you have questions, Don offers a free 30 minute consultation. Don can be reached at 206-779-1634 or through his website: http://www.transitionsindementiacare.com/contact/.
