Presentations

Right at Home of Ventura County is a strong advocate of providing information to assist the community in learning more about improving their quality of life. As a community service, we provide informational talks on issues of concern to seniors and their families. Each talk is 30 to 45 minutes with time for Q&A. These are provided free of charge to local community groups, church groups, and fraternal organizations. Talks on four topics are described below. Right at Home Ventura County owner, Phil Chandler, offers Alzheimer's training and support opportunities through services offered as well as through speaking at different organizations throughout the area.

Alzheimer's and Other Dementia

Phil Chandler, Certified Senior Advisor and owner of the Right at Home in Ventura County, will present an overview of dementia, including Alzheimer’s, and practical tips for caregiving.

He will discuss impact that Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias have on the brain, the effect that dementia has on the individual, and practical advice for caregivers. The presentation will last about 45 minutes, with some time for Q&A.

Managing Your Health with Digital Health Devices

Phil Chandler will present an overview of devices that patients and consumers can use to track their health.

He will discuss AliveCor, a device that attaches to your smartphone and will take your ECG, Medfolio, advice to ensure compliance to complex medication regimes, and several other health related devices that are available and in development.

The presentation will last about 30 minutes, with some time for Q&A. The target audience is for those people with chronic illnesses and the general public.

Healthy Living for Your Brain and Body

Alzheimer’s Disease affects about 14,000 residents and is the is the fourth leading cause of death in Ventura County. This talk answers the question many people ask : “ What can I do to minimize the chance that I will get dementia?”. Phil will describe strategies for aging well including physical health and exercise, diet and nutrition, cognitive activity, and social engagement. The presentation includes video clips from doctors and patients describing good lifestyle habits. Discussion of a wide variety of helpful resources are provided. The talk is about 45 minutes with 15 minutes for Q&A.

Oral Health for Seniors

Phil Chandler will discuss oral health and the unique problems that can occur as we age. He will discuss some of the top issues experienced by seniors, red flags that indicate a visit to the dentist is appropriate, and describe some of the tools you can use to help with the care and maintenance of your teeth. He will provide anoverview of dental specialties and describe how serious diseases like diabetes can affect our mouths.

Understanding and Responding to Dementia-Related Behavior

People with dementia can exhibit behaviors that can be difficult to understand and manage. A caregiver may be frustrated dealing with someone with aggression, confusion, repetitive actions, wandering or paranoia. This presentation covers a four step process caregivers can use to decipher behavior and determine how best to respond. Practical information and resources are described so the caregiver has a framework to understand and address these difficult behaviors. This presentation lasts about 45 minutes with time for Q & A.
