End-of-life care requires deep compassion for the client and the client’s family. It’s a delicate situation to make sure proper care is met while helping the client live their last days as best as possible.

One of Nancy’s end-of-life clients enjoyed gardening, so Nancy built a garden where together they picked flowers to brighten the client’s room. Another client loves to hear Nancy sing, so they spend time singing songs from the “good ol’ days.” And recently, one of Nancy’s clients celebrated their 101st birthday. To mark the occasion, the two went on an adventurous car ride together, followed by a family dinner celebration.

“Families fall in love with Nancy because she treats them like family,” said Lou Giampa, owner of Right at Home White Plains. “Families repeatedly tell me how ‘blessed they are’ to have Nancy care for their loved ones.”

When a client’s health took a turn for the worse in the middle of the night, the family called Nancy. She went straight to her client’s home to be with her client for those final breaths. The family was comforted knowing that Nancy provided the utmost compassion for their loved one through the end of their life.

The families of Nancy’s clients are not the only ones who notice her gift of caregiving. She leads by example, showing great pride in her work and helping each client live with dignity and respect.

“By watching how Nancy works with her clients, our caregivers are seeing end-of-life experiences differently,” said Giampa. “The caregivers are bringing that same level of compassion to their clients who have dementia or are in hospice care. This greatly comforts the clients and families who look to us for this meaningful care.”

Nancy has never missed a day of work during the pandemic. Knowing her clients are a vulnerable population, she has ensured that she has been healthy and has volunteered to pick up extra work to limit the number of caregivers going into a client’s home.

Whether singing, gardening, or picking up extra shifts to keep her fragile clients living their final days in the best way possible, Nancy’s compassion, selflessness, and willingness to go above and beyond have made her a valued member of Right at Home and a beloved caregiver for seniors in the White Plains community.
